Setting out everyday harm reduction in an online drug enthusiasts community
By Salomé Gilles
English
This ethnographic study using the social media Discord describes “servers” for drug enthusiasts as online spaces for social links and learning, but also for daily resistance to the rationale of prohibition. Users develop strategies based on their own experiences and the resources of an international network of drug enthusiasts. This vernacular harm reduction (HR) policy contributes to collective risk management through the transmission of consumption techniques and a cautious attitude. Set up as a model embodied by the members of the community, HR ethos demonstrates a concern for oneself and others that reconciles drug use and the pursuit of a good life.
