English
This paper attempts to describe the functioning of French academic institutions (their ways of thinking and acting) in order to understand the problems impacting the French School system, particularly violence. Twenty-six middle schools from the Nord region of France participated in the survey. The results show four paradoxes in school functioning, which seem to prevent French academic institutions from making progress in their daily struggle against violence.
