Video Surveillance in High Schools

From Preventing Intruders to Regulating Indiscipline

In order to combat violence in schools, schools have often turned to CCTV. Why have they done so and how have they chosen this particular response ? What has happened in practice ? What has been the impact of the introduction of this technology on the educational community ? The article tries to address these questions, from the basis of research undertaken in 10 secondary schools in the Ile-de-France region. It shows that even though the publicity about its introduction stressed prevention of “intruders,” CCTV has in practice often been used as a tool in maintaining order in schools.
