“Odds and Evens”: An Organizational Analysis of a Women’s Detention Wing

By Christophe Dubois
English

This paper shows how two teams of prison guards organize themselves and interact daily in a prison for women. It uses some concepts from the sociological literature on French prisons. These are used to shed light on our observations and to identify the mechanisms both teams use to construct a logic of dominant action. These two logics of dominant action are supposed to be in opposition. In fact, however, they balance each other out in order to allow the prison to work harmoniously.
