Violence and Deprivation of Freedom: Despotism in Prison

By Antoinette Chauvenet
English

This paper presents a sociological analysis based on empirical data about the link between the deprivation of liberty and violence in prison. The deprivation of liberty is defined as a political philosophical concept, which tries to escape a positivist point of view. Violence is analyzed through the social and political construction of the inmate based on fear and the deprivation of a common space of action and speech.
