The Problematic Restriction of the Concept of Social Control

By Nicolas Carrier
English

The concept of social control was critical in the development of American sociology. This concept encompassed a variety of mechanisms seen as the foundation of social order in modernity. The so-called “social reaction perspective” has completely transformed the meaning of the concept, which is now most often seen through a deliberately restrictive sociological lens. This article identifies the major problems of such a restrictive view, which calls for the end of its sociological use.
