Causes and Consequences of Research on “Warrior Capital” among Youth in Three Housing Projects

By Thomas Sauvadet
English

This paper discusses the social organization built by the young people occupying the public space of their residential developments and how and why they build it while questioning the state’s monopoly on physical violence. This approach shows the twofold oppression these young people (said to be “from ghettos”) face: on the one hand, they face a structural, vertical, and determining violence (exploitation, exclusion, and confinement); on the other hand, they face the horizontal violence (theft, physical and verbal assaults, or threats) that exists between the victims of the structural domination. This paper focuses on the horizontal dimension, about which little has been published.
