Do American Municipalities Favor the Emergence of Private Police Forces?

Based on original sources gathered in New York City and other large American cities, this article aims at casting a new light on the organization of law and order maintenance in the American urban society. During the past 20 years, American municipalities have given business circles more freedom to improve safety on their territories. This article examines the possibility that this approach could favor the emergence of private police forces and contribute to the development of inequalities.
