Convening the Disciplinary Board: Agreements and Disagreements in a Middle Class Junior High School

By Bénédicte Chevit

This article presents some fieldwork examples of the convening of a disciplinary authority (disciplinary commission, disciplinary council) in an “ordinary” junior high school. It is not unusual that such a convening leads to disagreements between categories of staff, or even between members of the same category. Each person or category indeed has its own view on the legitimacy of resorting to a disciplinary authority, depending on whether a deviant behaviour is acknowledged, on the perceived relevance of the disciplinary procedure and on the constraints that are associated by each member or category of staff to such a convening.
