Public Safety Policies in Belgium: The Limits of a Community Approach

Over the last decade, public safety policies in Belgium have had a strong local focus. The desire to act on the local level faster and earlier is clearly visible in police practices, prevention schemes, and judicial initiatives. Community policing, partners in prevention, criminal mediation, and immediate court appearances all express this desire to be close to the people spatially, temporally, and relationally. The addition of close control over specific at-risk populations is now even more manifest than in the past.
