Egon Bittner’s Work: An Introduction to the Sociology of Institutionalized Force

By Jean-Paul Brodeur
English

This paper is based on an interpretation of the works of Egon Bittner and a series of interviews with him. It aims to shed light on the main points of Bittner’s sociology of policing, particularly the emphasis it places on the use of force in police work. The ability to use force is depicted more as a specific authorization from a questionable source rather than the actual recourse to force. Lastly, this paper discusses the issue of assessing the success of community and of problem-oriented policing.
