Why Do They Riot?

Presentations of Rioters’ Discourse and Motivations

Rioting is a recent phenomenon the distinct features of which have yet to be pinned down. It may be viewed as a substitute for a lack of integration and sociability that allows people to express their identity in a negative way. However, an analysis of the rioters’ motives, their risk-assessments, and the meanings they attribute to their behavior reveals that no de facto correlation can be established between rioting and delinquency.
