Investigating fear of crime and victimization: A systematic comparison of the major French surveys
Victimization surveys constitute the main means of studying the volume and trends in crime. However, in France, the study of victimization was disrupted by the cessation of the INSEE CVS survey in 2022. To preserve the observation of long-term trends, this article provides a systematic comparison of the main national surveys and their results, covering the period from 2019 to 2022. Using factorial methods and regression analyses, it highlights the specificities produced by each instrument and the similarities that emerge from an analysis of the structure of responses. The constructed factorial map enhances our understanding of victimization surveys and opens up new perspectives for the reconstruction of a composite time series combining multiple surveys.
