Prisons are organised on the basis of sex segregation. This rigid and cisnormative gender binarity is problematic for trans prisoners. This article is based on interviews with (ex-) trans prisoners and professionals in the Belgian prison system. The analysis presents the main experiences and difficulties that trans people in prison face: placement and transfer decisions, different forms of (micro-)aggression, gendered prison organisation and infrastructure, as well as the lack of access to certain services, items and specialised care.
