No Cannabis Cultivation without Women. The Case of Rif in Morocco

Cannabis cultivation in Rif, which is family farming, has a complex work organisation. Each member of the family contributes, obeying rules which vary according to gender, age and the place that that family member occupies in the family. Women are shown how to undertake certain stages of cultivation by men and do a considerable amount of the work, without always profiting from the social milieu or income created. Through studying the place of visibility and invisibility of these women in the cannabis cultivation culture, the article analyses the role of women, from that point on a major one, given they produce certain strategies which ensure the maintenance of cultivation.
