Does the Commercialization of Security Increase the Responsibilities of Individuals or Companies?

This paper examines the extent to which the growing commercialization of security has become a factor in individuals taking responsibility for their own security. At first, it seems quite logical to think that easy access to security products and services is raising peoples’ ability to provide for their own safety. However, a more thoughtful analysis of security shows that privatization has not made individuals more responsible. The fragmentation of urban space and the resulting increase in the number of decision-making bodies have put the responsibility on businesses, not on citizens, with the latter playing a minor role in the security market; a market that has become one of the main sources of regulating security; a market that is also not exempt from a certain normative inclination.
