Controlling the Police with Performance Indicators?

Breaking with critical approaches which analyse the construction of performance indicators, this paper deals with the effects of these instruments on the steering capacities of police organizations and public security policies. In police organizations, performance indicators reinforce the power of the hierarchy. However, this process of organizational integration has important limits : in response to this increased pressure, the rank and file develop strategies to guard their autonomy jealously.
