The Psychosocial Work of Placing Children in Foster Homes

By Michel Giraud
English

This paper presents the results of a study that analyzed the legal and administrative handling of “at-risk minors.” It performs a sociological analysis of the effects of displacement on the family relationship. This approach raises theoretical questions about the consequences of rehoming, which, in cases where the minor is attached to his/her family, can result in the “deterritorialization” of the self. This is a singular form of socialization, which can be identified by a recurrent psychic malaise, which manifests as long-term anxiety. When minors living in this state of chronic uncertainty are rehomed, they devote most of their energy to forming new yet improbable links with people and places. This exhausts minors to such an extent that they have no energy for anything else.
