Tourism and Security in Andalusia: Results from a Victimization Survey of Tourists

By Marcelo F. Aebi
English

This article presents the results of a crime victims survey conducted in Andalusia during the summer of 2002 with a sample of tourists (N = 2968). Victimization rates are relatively high, thus corroborating the relevance of criminological theories that emphasize the role of opportunities in crime causation and consider tourists as a group highly exposed to the risk of crime victimization. Nevertheless, the offences committed against tourists are not particularly serious and only one half is denounced to the police. The analysis also corroborates the risk of overestimating delinquency by using crime victims survey, insofar as the tourists reported some victimizations that took place beyond the period studied.
